Within the green energy segment, we are active in the production and marketing of low- and zero-carbon energy from wind, photovoltaic and biomass sources. In addition, we are pursuing pioneering hydrogen projects, including the production of green hydrogen, the development of hydrogen infrastructure, and the construction and sale of hydrogen-powered buses.
We started operations in the Green Energy segment in July 2023, with the acquisition of control of the PAK-PCE Group.
Low- and zero-carbon energy production
In accordance with the adopted strategy, we are investing in the development of renewable energy production capacity, which is carried out by special-purpose companies concentrated within the structures of the PAK-PCE Group.
The Group's generation assets include the Brudzew/Cambria photovoltaic farm with 82.4 MW and 3 wind farms: Miłosław, Kazimierz Biskupi and Człuchów with a total capacity of 99.7 MW. The Group's energy producer is also Biopaliwa i Wodór sp. z o.o., which uses 2 biomass units, located in Konin, with a total generating capacity of 105 MW to produce electricity and heat from biomass.
In parallel, in accordance with strategic assumptions, further RES projects are being implemented - the Przyrów, Drzeżewo and Dobra wind farms. Design work is also underway, conducted jointly with ZE PAK S.A., related to the construction of another photovoltaic farm in the Przykona municipality.
The total installed capacity of the wind projects, once the ongoing investments are completed, will be close to 300 MW.
Energy sales and trading
Electricity is sold and traded by our subsidiary PAK-VOLT S.A., which serves as the Group's energy hub. PAK-VOLT holds licenses for trading electricity and gaseous fuels throughout the country.
PAK-VOLT's main activities include:
- Sales and commercial balancing of electricity and gaseous fuel to wholesale and end users (excluding households).
- Purchase and sale of electricity and guarantees of origin from low-carbon and renewable sources.
- Repurchase of electricity from micro and small photovoltaic and cogeneration installations.
- Trading of electricity and gaseous fuel on POLPX and on the technical balancing market.
Sales of green energy from the Group's renewable energy installations are mainly made through bilateral contracts through PAK-VOLT. Energy customers include Polsat Plus Group companies and Google Cloud, with whom we have entered into long-term PPAs.
PAK-VOLT also has a portfolio of non-Group customers with whom it has contracts for the sale of electricity, gaseous fuel and the repurchase of energy from micro RES installations. Wholesale customers are trading companies or distribution system operators, and end customers are micro, small, medium and large enterprises from various sectors of the economy.
Green hydrogen production and distribution
Within the green energy segment, we are building a full value chain of a green hydrogen economy, i.e. hydrogen produced by electrolysis based on electricity from renewable energy installations, i.e. wind, photovoltaic and biomass.
Our Biofuels and Hydrogen company is implementing a project to build a hydrogen plant, located in Konin, next to a biomass power plant, the energy from which will be used to produce hydrogen. We are commissioning the first PEM electrolyzer with a capacity of 2.5 MW, producing 1,000 kg of hydrogen per day. Our subsidiary Exion Hydrogen Polskie Elektrolizery sp. z o.o. has designed a prototype Polish 0.5 MW alkaline electrolyzer, producing 200 kg of hydrogen per day. Alkaline electrolyzers can be combined in a modular manner, increasing production capacity.
The hydrogen sales model is based on contracts with municipal organized transport (public) companies, which call for tenders for hydrogen supplies, in which a Group company competes and provides hydrogen and the option of refueling at stationary stations, as is the case in Rybnik. The company also offers a model in which it provides a package that includes a hydrogen station, a hydrogen bus and a supply of green hydrogen, billed on the basis of kilometers traveled.
We are also developing hydrogen transportation, storage and distribution infrastructure, using hydrogen buses with capacities of 371 kg and 1,000 kg. Our company PAK PCE Stations H2 is building a network of hydrogen stations. Three Neso stations are currently in operation in Warsaw, Rybnik and Gdansk, with more to be built in Gdynia, Lublin and Wroclaw, among others. We also have several mobile hydrogen refueling stations.
Production and distribution of hydrogen buses
Together with ZE PAK, we have designed an innovative hydrogen bus, the NesoBus ("No Exhaust Emission and Clean"), which made its debut in May 2022. Production takes place at our Świdnik plant, which can produce about 100 buses a year from the second half of 2023. Our subsidiary PAK-PCE Polski Autobus Wodorowy is responsible for production and sales.
We believe that hydrogen will play a key role in a low-carbon economy, especially in public transportation. We are targeting cities and metropolitan areas in response to the growing demands for decarbonization of urban fleets. We have already delivered the first buses to urban carriers and are pursuing further orders.
Thanks to our cooperation with hydrogen production and distribution companies, we offer a comprehensive service that includes the supply of hydrogen, refueling stations and hydrogen buses. We are competing in city tenders, building the NesoBus brand. Our buses are distinguished by their low CO2 emissions, zero emissions, short refueling times and long range. We also plan to expand into foreign markets.
